Three slanted alphabets, three different jobs: serif italic for running text, serif bold italic for a line that has to be seen first, sans-serif bold italic when the surroundings are already a sans typeface.
Weight and slant at the same time
Bold italic combines the slant of italic with the weight of bold. It is the style newspapers used for a pull quote and the one that survives best when a platform shrinks text: the strokes stay thick enough to read on a phone at arm's length.
The alphabet is complete in Unicode with no borrowed letters, and digits are substituted with bold digits, so mixed text like a date or a score keeps one consistent weight. It is also the style least likely to be mistaken for a rendering glitch: readers recognise bold italic from print, so a heading in it reads as intentional typography rather than as a font error, which matters when the surrounding platform text is plain sans-serif.

The full bold italic set
Mathematical Bold Italic (U+1D468โU+1D49B) is complete โ 52 letters, no borrowed glyphs โ so a word keeps one weight throughout. Digits are swapped for Mathematical Bold digits so a year or a number in a title matches. Because the letters carry serifs, the lowercase ๐ and ๐ have the two-storey forms of a book face rather than the single-storey forms of handwriting; if you want the handwritten shapes, bold cursive is the closer match.

Headings, not paragraphs
- Captions that need to shout. A one-line caption in bold italic stands apart from the comment thread below it.
- Channel and server titles. Weight and slant make a title scannable in a long list of channels.
- Signatures in emails and forums. A bold italic name closes a message with more presence than plain text.
Where it holds up
Bold italic is a heading style, and platforms treat it that way: on Instagram it is most often the first line of a bio or a caption hook; on Discord it works well for server names and pinned-message titles; on X it makes a display name stand out in a busy timeline without ornaments. TikTok renders it fully in nickname and bio. It is also the style that survives best in email subject lines and forum signatures, where thinner cursive can look broken.
If it arrives as empty boxes
Bold italic shares its Unicode block with every other style here, so a destination that shows boxes for it will show boxes for all of them; use plain text there. Where the platform offers its own bold and italic formatting โ Discord, Slack, Reddit, Google Docs โ native formatting is the better tool: it is searchable, readable by screen readers and cannot be stripped as an unknown character. Use bold italic Unicode only in the fields that have no formatting at all: bios, display names and captions.
Bold italic cursive โ questions
How is this different from bold cursive?
Bold cursive uses looped script letterforms; bold italic uses slanted serif letterforms. Both are heavy, but bold italic is more upright and formal.
Can I mix bold italic with plain text in one bio?
Yes โ paste only the words you want emphasised. The generator converts whatever you type, so type the phrase alone and paste it into the middle of a plain sentence.
Do the digits change too?
Yes. Numbers become Unicode bold digits so a year or a number in a title matches the weight of the letters.
Where does bold italic beat bold cursive?
Anywhere the text has to stay legible while very small and formal: a channel name, a comment header, a forum signature. Bold cursive's loops blur at small sizes; bold italic's serif shapes do not.
Will bold italic numbers match?
Yes. Digits are substituted with Unicode bold digits, which are upright but share the letters' weight, so a year in a title reads as part of the title.
Rendering notes on this page describe how the current system fonts (Apple Symbols on iOS and macOS, Segoe UI Symbol on Windows, Noto Sans Math on Android) draw these characters and which fields each platform accepts them in. They are not the result of testing every app version, and apps change fonts and rules; paste a short sample before relying on a style for something that matters.
