The vertical position is part of each character. These samples use real Unicode glyphs; the destination font determines their exact size.

“Small text” can mean several different things. Small capitals sit on the ordinary baseline and look like compact uppercase letters. Superscripts sit above it; subscripts sit below it. They are separate characters, so a small-caps word is not the same thing as shrinking a font in a document.

Read the letters that did not change

The small-caps result combines phonetic letters from several Unicode blocks. It converts upper- and lowercase into the same form. Ordinary q and x remain because this tool does not substitute unrelated look-alikes. You cannot recover the original capitalisation from that result alone.

The raised row converts lowercase letters except q, plus ten digits and five operators. The lowered row has only seventeen lowercase letters: a e h i j k l m n o p r s t u v x. Capitals, accents, emoji and other writing systems stay as written. The unchanged-letter line under each result makes these gaps visible before you copy.

Use a specialised tool for an exponent or formula

For a short bio, try all three results and paste a small test into the destination field. For x² or a footnote, use the superscript selection tool. For H₂O, use the subscript tool, which can lower digits while keeping element symbols uppercase.

Small characters can be hard to read or announced as phonetic letters by a screen reader. Keep important names, links and instructions ordinary. To mix a small word with readable text, use the font mixer rather than converting an entire paragraph.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make every letter equally tiny?

No. Unicode has incomplete raised and lowered alphabets. A document’s font-size setting can shrink any text, but that setting does not travel with plain text copied into a bio.

Does small text use fewer characters?

No. One substituted letter generally remains one character, and some phonetic letters use two UTF-16 units. Each result reports both counts; small appearance does not bypass a field limit.
