Crossed out, character by character
A line through text is the universal sign of an edit, a joke or a change of plan — 'old name' struck out above the new one. Like the underlined style, this one attaches a combining mark, the long stroke overlay (U+0336), to every letter so the strike travels with the text.
The base letters are bold cursive, chosen because a stroke through thin script letters can hide them entirely. Combining marks render on all current systems but vary in position; on a few fonts the line sits high on tall letters and low on short ones.
The overlay mark
Bold Mathematical Script letters with a combining long stroke overlay (U+0336) attached to every letter and digit; the bold base is chosen because a stroke through thin script can hide the letter completely. Marks are not added to spaces, punctuation or emoji. The stroke is part of each character, so Copy plain text on the homepage can strip it again and recover the original word. Digits become bold digits before the stroke is applied.
An overlay mark is drawn through the character it attaches to, not next to it. Fonts position it from the letter's own metrics, so a stroke that sits dead centre on a bold letter can sit slightly high on a light one.

Where it survives and where it is stripped
A struck-through word renders on Instagram, Discord, X and TikTok in bios, captions and display names; Instagram and TikTok are marked Limited because their fonts place the stroke at slightly different heights on tall and short letters, and a small number of apps strip combining marks entirely. Discord renders the stroke evenly. It is most often used for an old handle or price crossed out next to the new one.

Prices, edits and jokes
- Before-and-after names. Strike the old handle or title in a bio and write the new one beside it.
- Sarcasm and jokes. The struck word is the joke; the plain word after it is the punchline.
- Sold-out and cancelled notices. Cross out an item, a date or a price in a caption or pinned comment.
If the line does not cross the letters
Where a platform offers native strikethrough — Discord, Slack, Reddit and most document editors do, usually with a tilde or a toolbar button — use it: it is searchable and accessible, and it cannot be stripped as an unknown mark. Use the Unicode version only in bios, display names and captions that have no formatting. If the stroke disappears after pasting, the app removed the combining marks; if it sits at an odd height, that is the destination font's positioning. Copy as plain text on the homepage recovers the bare letters.

Why is the line uneven on some letters?
Every letter carries its own stroke and each font positions it relative to that glyph. Ascenders and descenders make the line appear to jump.
Can I remove the strike later?
Paste the text into the homepage generator and use Copy plain text — the tool strips its own combining marks and reverses the letters to plain ASCII.
Does strikethrough work in usernames?
No. Combining marks are rejected by username fields on every major platform. Display names and bios accept them.
Does struck text still count as the original word?
Not for search. The letters are styled Unicode characters with a mark attached, so a search for the plain word will not find it. Use it for display, not for anything that has to be found.
Can I strike through emoji or Chinese text?
No — this site attaches the mark only to letters and digits it converts. Emoji, CJK and other scripts pass through untouched, which keeps them from rendering with a stray line.
