Fraktur has two weights, not connected handwriting
“Gothic”, “blackletter” and “Old English” often describe this visual style in text generators. This page uses Unicode’s mathematical Fraktur alphabets, not a downloadable historical typeface. Both weights have upper- and lowercase Latin letters. There are no matching Fraktur digits in these alphabets, so 2026 remains ordinary.
Five light capitals come from an older block
C, H, I, R and Z reuse black-letter capitals already encoded in Letterlike Symbols. The later Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block points to those earlier characters rather than duplicating them. Bold Fraktur has its complete capital set in the newer block. A change of block can mean a different fallback font, which explains why one capital can look unlike its neighbours.
Use a short name with an ordinary version
Blackletter can work as a visual flourish in a heading or display name. It can also be hard to distinguish letters, pronounce with assistive technology or find in a search. Copy the ordinary companion result when a reader needs an accessible name, and keep an account handle in plain letters.
For a single blackletter word inside a normal sentence, use the selection mixer. If a glyph appears as a box, try the other weight or ordinary text; the box explanation covers missing fonts, although its automated test checks cursive styles rather than certifying Fraktur.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download this as an Old English font?
No. The copy buttons produce Unicode characters. A downloadable font file is a separate product with its own glyph coverage and licence.
Why are the numbers not gothic?
The two mathematical Fraktur alphabets contain Latin letters, not Fraktur digits. This tool preserves ordinary numbers rather than borrowing a different alphabet and claiming a matching set.
