Slanted, not looped
Italic sits halfway between print and cursive: the letters slant and the serifs soften, but each letter stands on its own without loops. That makes it the most legible of the handwriting-adjacent styles and the one to use when a full paragraph needs emphasis in an app that has no italics button.
The letters come from the Mathematical Italic alphabet. One letter, lowercase h, is borrowed from the Letterlike Symbols block because β (Planck's constant) was encoded first; on most fonts the difference is invisible.
Italic against script, letter for letter
- Italic cursiveπππππ’ππππ‘π
- Cursive scriptβ³πΆπβπβ―ππΎπβ―
Italic keeps serifs and a single slant; script adds loops and a connected look. At small sizes italic stays readable where script closes up, which is why long captions read better in italic.
The one letter that is not where you would expect
The alphabet is Mathematical Italic (U+1D434βU+1D467) with one borrowed letter: lowercase h is β (U+210E), the Planck-constant symbol, which was encoded before the rest. On most fonts it is indistinguishable; on a few the ascender is a touch shorter. The capital letters have true serifs, so a word in capitals β ππΈπ β reads like a printed book heading, not handwriting. Digits, accents and punctuation pass through unchanged. There is no italic variant of the borrowed letters problem that light script has, which makes italic the more predictable of the two light styles.

Where italic reads better than script
- Emphasis in plain-text apps. SMS, most chat apps and many comment fields have no italics β this is the workaround.
- Book and film titles. Italicise a title in a post or bio the way you would in print.
- Subtle bios. A slanted line under a plain display name adds tone without decoration.
App by app
Italic text is accepted by every platform's bio and display-name fields and is the least conspicuous of the styles: on Instagram and X it can pass for a formatting choice rather than a font trick. Discord renders Mathematical Italic with its serif shapes intact, which stands out against Discord's sans-serif interface more than it does on Instagram. TikTok shows it at full size in the bio and nickname. In messaging apps β WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram β it is the usual way to italicise a title or a word when the app has no italics button.
Fallbacks when italic is unavailable
When italic text does not survive a paste, check whether the destination already offers real italics β Discord, Reddit, Slack and most messaging apps do, through markdown or a formatting button β because native formatting is always more reliable than substituted characters. If the field has no formatting and rejects Unicode letters, it will reject every style here. If the letters render but a lowercase h looks different, that is the borrowed Planck-constant glyph; bold italic has no such letter and is the closest visual substitute.
Italic cursive β questions
Is italic really cursive?
Strictly, no β cursive joins letters and italic does not. People search for the two together because both mimic handwriting, so this style is here for that reason.
Why does the lowercase h look slightly different?
It is the Planck constant symbol β, encoded before the rest of the italic alphabet. Most fonts draw it identically; a few give it a shorter ascender.
Will a screen reader read italic Unicode text?
Usually letter by letter, often with the words 'mathematical italic' attached, which is tiring to listen to. Keep italic Unicode to a phrase, not a paragraph, if accessibility matters.
Is Unicode italic the same as pressing the italic button?
No. The italic button applies formatting to plain letters, which is lost when you paste elsewhere. Unicode italic replaces the letters with different characters, which travel with the text but cannot be searched as the plain word.
Which platforms already have real italics?
Discord (markdown), Reddit, Slack, WhatsApp, Telegram and most document editors. In those, native italics are the better choice; use Unicode italic in bios and display names that offer no formatting.
Rendering notes on this page describe how the current system fonts (Apple Symbols on iOS and macOS, Segoe UI Symbol on Windows, Noto Sans Math on Android) draw these characters and which fields each platform accepts them in. They are not the result of testing every app version, and apps change fonts and rules; paste a short sample before relying on a style for something that matters.
