The fleuron and its rotated twin

Light script letters (eleven borrowed capitals and lowercase letters, as in the plain script style) between two fleurons: ❦ (U+2766, floral heart) on the left and ❧ (U+2767, rotated floral heart) on the right. Fleurons β€” also called hederae, Latin for ivy β€” have closed chapters and separated paragraphs in printed books since the fifteenth century. They are separate characters and can be swapped after pasting. Digits pass through unchanged because light script has no digits.

A fleuron is a printer's flower β€” the leaf-shaped ornament used to close a chapter or fill the end of a line. Unicode encodes the pair, and this style puts one at each end of your text.

A printer's mark, reused

The floral heart β€” ❦ and its mirror ❧, called a fleuron or hedera β€” has closed chapters and separated paragraphs in printed books since the fifteenth century. Setting cursive script between a pair of them gives text the feel of an old title page or a letterpress card.

Both fleurons are in the Dingbats block and are present in every mainstream system font, so this is one of the more portable decorated styles. The letters are the light script alphabet; for a heavier vintage look, copy the output and paste it into the bold cursive card.

Invitations, menus, chapter breaks

  • Vintage and retro shop bios. A fleuron-framed shop name matches the product photography without a logo.
  • Book and poetry accounts. The printer's ornament is the natural frame for a line of verse.
  • Wedding and invitation text. Names and dates in the style of a letterpress invitation.

Support for the fleurons

Fleuron-framed text suits shop bios, book accounts and wedding captions on Instagram, where the ornaments render in the text colour at full size. Discord, X and TikTok all show ❦ and ❧, though TikTok draws them a little smaller than the letters (Limited). It is one of the more robust decorated styles because both fleurons live in the Dingbats block alongside the stars, which the current system fonts all cover.

If the fleuron is missing

The fleurons sit outside the word, so if they render as boxes you can delete them and keep the script letters unchanged; a plain ✦ or ❀ from another symbol block usually survives where ❦ does not. If the script letters themselves are the problem β€” a capital that looks heavier than the rest β€” bold cursive between the same two fleurons keeps the vintage framing with a complete alphabet. For a printed invitation, a real script typeface will always beat pasted characters; this style is for the caption that announces it.

Vintage cursive β€” questions

What is the ❦ symbol called?

A fleuron, or hedera (Latin for ivy). It is one of the oldest typographic ornaments and has its own Unicode characters, ❦ (U+2766) and ❧ (U+2767).

Does the fleuron render everywhere?

It is in the Dingbats block alongside the four-pointed star, so any font that shows ✦ also shows ❦. Coverage is very wide on current devices.

Can I use a different ornament?

Yes β€” after copying, replace the fleurons with any symbol. The fancy style uses stars and the aesthetic style uses sparkle brackets, both with the same script letters.

What is the difference between ❦ and ❧?

They are the same ornament facing two ways: ❦ (U+2766) is the floral heart and ❧ (U+2767) the rotated floral heart. Printers used them in pairs to frame a line, which is why this style does.

Does vintage cursive work in an email signature?

In most desktop and mobile mail clients, yes β€” the fleurons and script letters render in the recipient's system font. Plain-text-only clients show boxes, so keep a plain name on the line above.

Rendering notes on this page describe how the current system fonts (Apple Symbols on iOS and macOS, Segoe UI Symbol on Windows, Noto Sans Math on Android) draw these characters and which fields each platform accepts them in. They are not the result of testing every app version, and apps change fonts and rules; paste a short sample before relying on a style for something that matters.
