Where โณ comes from
โณ is U+2133 SCRIPT CAPITAL M. It has been in Unicode since version 1.1, in the Letterlike Symbols block. Unicode gives it the aliases โM-matrix (physics)โ and โGerman Mark currency symbol, before WWIIโ. Its note reads โwhen used for the Mark symbol, the range of glyph variation is restrictedโ.
The Mathematical Script alphabet was added in Unicode 3.1. Its position for capital M, U+1D4A8, is reserved and cross-referenced to โณ instead of holding a character of its own, so the Unicode data sends that position to โณ.
Because โณ sits in a different Unicode block from ๐ฆ and ๐ฉ (Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols), a font can design it separately, and how closely they match depends on the font. โณ takes one UTF-16 unit where ๐ฆ takes two.
